「辻君、あるいは夜鷹とは、夜中に道を歩く男性に声をかける下級の娼婦。そのほとんどが厚化粧をした年配の女性であり、黒い着物に手ぬぐいを被り、茣蓙を抱えるというのが典型的なスタイルであった。図の女性はまさしく夜鷹の格好をしているが、夜鷹にしては美しい面貌である。一とせとうい評判の夜鷹で『新撰歌俳百人撰』によれば（駐）、本所にいた心やさしい女性で、和歌や書の嗜みもあったと伝えられている。

Streetwalkers, known as tsujigimi (crossroads girls) or yotaka (night hawks), were low class prostitutes who would approach men on the streets at night. They were mostly older women, heavily made up, and would typically dress in black kimono while covering their heads with tenugui (hand towels) and carrying woven rush mats. The woman in this picture is wearing the standard yotaka outfit, but for a streetwalker she is extremely attractive. Hitotose was a renowned prostitute based in the Honjo area of Edo, and according to ‘Shinpen Kahai Hyakuninsen’ (One Hundred Selected Poets: New Edition)*, she was kind-hearted and accomplished at waka poetry and calligraphy.
